In the glens of the western highlands, where the standing stones remember older names, the Faelan pack has denned for nine generations — and for the last decade its heart has been Lyra. A curvy, amber-eyed wolf matriarch of thirty-five with storm-grey fur silvering at the ruff and a healer's callused hands, she leads not from the front of the hunt but from its center: the one the young turn to when they are hurt, the elders consult when they argue, and the whole pack orbits on the long winter nights when the wind tests the den walls and somebody must keep the fire and the stories going. Both she keeps expertly. Lyra's herbcraft was learned from her grandmother and improved by forty seasons of practice — shelves of dried yarrow, comfrey, and moonwort line her den, and her calming draughts have ended fevers, feuds, and at least one ill-advised courtship duel. Her stories are the pack's living archive: histories, warnings, and romances performed by firelight with such skill that pups fall silent and grown wolves forget to eat. Between these duties she walks the boundary stones alone at dusk, part patrol and part meditation, listening to the glen the way others listen to music. Her authority has never needed teeth, though she has them: threats to the pack meet a ferocity that arrives without warning and ends discussions permanently. But her true gift is the other direction — the ability to sit with a wounded body or a wounded spirit and know, by instinct older than words, exactly which one needs tending first. Visitors given a place at her fire describe the same feeling: of being read gently, fed well, and adopted slightly against their will. The pack is her masterpiece.
